The much-anticipated Trump-Harris presidential debate took place in Philadelphia, marking the first direct confrontation between former President Donald Trump and Vice President Kamala Harris.

This high-stakes debate occurred just weeks before the US Presidential elections, with both candidates eager to present themselves as the leader the country needs to move to the next level of development.

The debate, filled with fiery exchanges, set the stage for some critical moments in the race for the presidency. Here are the key talking points from the event.

Harris Woos the Middle Class

Kamala Harris quickly leaned into her economic plan, targeting middle-class voters by offering specific solutions to lower costs for American families.

She highlighted her ‘‘opportunity economy’’ and outlined a tax credit of $6,000 for young families, emphasizing the need for affordable housing, childcare, and better opportunities for working-class people.

Harris said, ‘‘We know that we have a shortage of homes and housing, and the cost of housing is too expensive for far too many people.’’ She positioned herself as a problem-solver who would prioritize the middle class.

On the other hand, Donald Trump attacked Harris' economic policies, claiming that her vision would hurt businesses and accused her of mimicking his own policies. Trump said, ‘‘I was going to send her a MAGA hat,’’ as he defended his track record of economic achievements, particularly on tariffs and corporate tax cuts.

His goal was to paint Harris as a radical who is pushing an agenda that would hurt the American economy.

Both Candidates Claim to Represent Change

One of the defining moments of the Trump-Harris presidential debate was the fight for the title of the true ‘‘candidate of change.’’

Both candidates presented themselves as the answer to a country weary of political division and economic challenges. Harris was quick to label Trump as the ‘‘same old, tired playbook’’ while promising new solutions for the future.

‘‘The American people are exhausted with the same old, tired playbook,’’ she said, targeting Trump’s time in office and his handling of immigration and the economy.

Trump, meanwhile, tried to link Harris to President Biden’s policies, particularly regarding immigration, and accused the current administration of allowing dangerous migrants into the country.

He stated, ‘‘These are the people that she and Biden led into our country, and they’re destroying our country.’’ Trump also positioned himself as the candidate who could fix the immigration system and stop illegal border crossings.

Heated Debate on Abortion

One of the most intense exchanges during the debate was over abortion rights. Harris promised to sign a law restoring Roe v. Wade protections if elected. ‘‘I pledge to you: When Congress passes a bill to put back in place the protections of Roe v. Wade as president of the United States, I will proudly sign it into law,’’ Harris declared.

In contrast, Trump sidestepped questions about whether he would veto a federal abortion ban if Congress passed one. When pressed, he responded, “Well, I won’t have to,” further clouding his stance on the issue.

He said he’s “not signing” such a ban because there’s “no reason to,” arguing that “everybody” is happy with the termination of Roe v. Wade.

Trump’s Missed Opportunities

Throughout the debate, Harris baited Trump into defensive responses, pulling him away from key issues like inflation and the economy, which should have been his strengths.

She attacked him on various fronts, from his stance on abortion to his handling of the COVID-19 pandemic, and even his association with conspiracy theories.

One notable moment came when Harris invited Americans to watch a Trump rally, stating, “He talks about fictional characters like Hannibal Lecter... And what you will also notice is that people start leaving his rallies early out of exhaustion and boredom.”

This rattled Trump, who immediately defended his rallies as “the most incredible rallies in the history of politics” and even made controversial claims about migrants eating pets. This exchange highlighted how easily Trump could be sidetracked from critical issues.

Trump Attacks as Harris Defends Policy Shifts

During the Trump-Harris presidential debate, one of the key moments came when Donald Trump went after Kamala Harris for her shifting positions on several major policies.

Harris had previously taken more progressive stances during the 2020 Democratic presidential primaries, such as advocating for a ban on fracking and mandatory buybacks of semi-automatic firearms. However, since then, Harris has evolved or moderated these positions.

When questioned about her policy shifts, Harris firmly defended her current stance. “I made that very clear in 2020, I will not ban fracking,” she stated, emphasizing her role in the Inflation Reduction Act, which approved new leases for fracking. “My values have not changed,” Harris added, underscoring her belief that she remains consistent in her core principles.

Trump, however, seized the moment to attack her credibility. He portrayed Harris as a radical leftist and claimed she would end fracking if elected.

She wants to confiscate your guns, and she will never allow fracking in Pennsylvania,” Trump said. His pointed remarks were aimed at depicting Harris as out of touch with moderate voters, especially in key battleground states like Pennsylvania.

Final Thoughts

As the US Presidential elections draw closer, this debate will undoubtedly play a significant role in shaping the opinions of undecided voters. Both Donald Trump and Kamala Harris staked their claims to the future of the country, but it remains to be seen who will emerge victorious in this closely contested race.
