President Joe Biden stood down from the Presidential race earlier this week, endorsing Kamala Harris as the party's nominee for the 2024 US elections. Meanwhile, Kamala Harris embraces the announcement, alongside a sizable number of Democrats in quick time.
Biden’s Sunday Announcement
Upending an already dramatic period leading to the 2024 US elections, Biden announced on Sunday that he was quitting the presidential race. The presidential elections took a tumultuous twist based on his incoherent showing during the June 27 Presidential debate against Donald Trump. Biden announces he'll remain in the White House till January.
Declaring his intentions in a letter posted on his official social media account on X, Biden penned,
"It has been the greatest honor of my life to serve as your President, And while I have intended to seek reelection, I believe it is in the best interest of my party and the country for me to stand down and to focus solely on fulfilling my duties as President for the remainder of my term," Biden added that he will provide additional details on his decision to Americans later this week.
Praising Harris, while endorsing party faithfuls to converge behind the Vice President, Biden said, “(Appointing VP Harris in 2020 is) been the best decision I’ve made. Today, I want to offer my full support and endorsement for Kamala to be the nominee for our party this year.”
Biden's Sunday announcement didn't come as a surprise to many Democrats who called for Biden's exit from the presidential race. However, Harris had repeatedly announced her support for President Biden's interest in running for the 2024 elections, publicly disregarding any intentions to oust him in a contest. Following Biden's announcement, she might become the first Black woman and Asian American to lead a top party ticket in the United States.
Harris Embraces Endorsement, Hits Ground Running
Hearing about the president’s Sunday endorsement, Harris says that she was “honored” by his approval and says she intends to win the nomination. Harris reportedly scheduled over 200 calls on Sunday to organizations, legislators, and donors, kick-starting her electioneering campaign.
The Vice President, however, already looks like a significant force to clinch the presidential ticket during the party's national convention in August. An Associated Press survey says over 2,600 delegates to the Democratic National Convention say they will vote for Harris, thumping the 1,976 minimum required votes to secure the party's nomination.
However, former President Barack Obama and ex-House Speaker Nancy Pelosi are yet to endorse the Vice President. Reports claim that Obama is poised to retain his 2020 posture, waiting to approve the eventual nominee when the national convention is held in August.
In a Nutshell
Harris to replace Biden if Democrats unite behind Biden's approval after the President quits the race. Harris emerges as the party's presumptive nominee for the 2024 election, with a majority endorsement from much of the party's delegates according to a survey. The presidential nominee will only emerge after delegates cast votes at the party's convention in August.
