At the just concluded 2024 Emmy Awards, Baby Reindeer went on to win in many categories. Richard Gadd’s triple win at the awards came from writing, producing and starring in the series which showed his desire in telling a story that needed to be told. In his acceptance speech, he was keen about supporting survivors and promoting consent, all of which resonated with the audience.

Another award the show received on the night was for Jessica Gunning who won the Best Supporting Actress Emmy award for her stellar performance in the series. She portrayed the character Martha with so much passion that we could understand her fragility and the difficulties of her victimhood.

Let’s also give her some credit for the seamless chemistry between herself and Gadd, which was beautiful to watch. Although both characters in the show had some toxic dynamics, they made it all captivating and unsettling.

We also have to acknowledge the brilliant of the other cast and crew who worked to bring this story to our screens. The movie would easily go down as a cultural touchstone, springing up discussions, and helping survivors share their stories.

Controversy Surrounding the Show

The show has faced some tough complaints from a woman who claimed that she was the real-life inspiration of the character Martha. Now, this has prompted her to file a lawsuit against Netflix with claims that Richard Gadd portrayal was an embellishment.

She also claimed that the portrayal would affect her reputation and wellbeing. This has raised questions from critics who have questioned the show’s authenticity. Richard Gadd has however maintained that the show was a fictionalized depiction of his experiences. So who is actually right in this case?
