We live in an era of good intentions gone worng. Movements that began as authentic cries against oppression repeatedly end up as mechanisms just as cruel and oppressive as the ones they sought to replace. We tend to view today's fringe phenomena as a "modern madness" born of social media or identity politics gone out of control. In reality, this is a compulsive repetition of a bug hardwired into human DNA since the dawn of history: The Tragedy of the Pure Ideal.
To understand why every attempt to build a perfect society collapses into itself, we must understand what an ideal is. An ideal is a sterile concept. It exists in a conceptual vacuum where "everyone is equal," "there are no borders," or "inclusion is absolute." Human and biological reality, however, is chaotic, messy, full of primal urges, fears, market forces, and laws of nature.
When a group tries to bring a pure ideal down to earth, it discovers that reality "contaminates" it. Because a pure ideal cannot bend (for then it ceases to be an ideal and is tainted by compromise), the only way to protect it is to use aggressive force to bend reality to fit the idea, even at the cost of trampling over human beings.
From Body Positivity to Cancel Culture: When the Cure Becomes the Poison
Take the Body Positivity movement, for example. It was born out of a critical, humane need: to free men and women from toxic, industrialized beauty standards ("heroin chic") and stigmas that led to eating disorders and self-hatred. The goal was self-acceptance. But as the idea morphed into a pure ideal, the pendulum swung to the opposite extreme. The movement began demanding the erasure of any objective metric and the absolute normalization of morbid obesity. Doctors warning against the diabetes and heart disease epidemics were immediately branded as cruel "fatphobes." The pure ideal refused to accept medical reality, thereby sacrificing the health of the very people it sought to protect, just to preserve the purity of the idea.
In the exact same way, the monster of Cancel Culture was born. It began as a welcome attempt to give a voice to the powerless (like in the #MeToo movement) and dismantle power structures that silenced racial discrimination and sexual harassment. But at dizzying speed, the ideal of a "safe space" devolved into a totalitarian field court. To keep the space sterile from any offense, the mechanism began digitally beheading anyone for the slightest deviation from the consensus. A decade-old joke, expressing a nuanced opinion, or using the "wrong" word now leads to a digital lynching, firing, and ostracization. The ideal of protecting feelings created a climate of intellectual terror where everyone, left and right, is terrified to speak.
The collision between a pure ideal and reality reaches its most painful climax in the struggle for transgender inclusion in sports. At its core, this is a just struggle to protect a vulnerable minority. But when the idea of "absolute inclusion regardless of gender" was blindly applied to physical sports arenas, it crashed head-on into biological reality. The most glaring example is in combat sports: the desire for pure inclusion created a situation where biological women are forced to take severe blows from transgender women who enjoy the inherent biological advantages of a biological male's bone density and muscle mass. Once again, the ideal refused to bend, and any woman who dared to protest the unfairness or the physical danger in the ring was "canceled" and silenced as a transphobe. The original desire to protect the weak simply found another weak group to run over.
Collapsing Europe and the Authenticity Spiral
This historical dynamic is highly evident in the European immigration crisis. Over recent decades, European liberalism ceased to be a balanced management system (combining human rights with local nationalism and security) and became a sacred, untouchable ideal: borders are an outdated concept, and all cultures are absolutely equal. This ideal refused to mix with "messy" questions of economics, a dramatic spike in crime, the strain on welfare systems, or the unwillingness of certain immigrants to integrate.
The purist mechanism applied force: any citizen or politician who dared to warn against the loss of social cohesion was immediately labeled a fascist or a racist (the "purity test"). But when an ideal refuses to mold itself to reality, reality takes its revenge. Liberalism’s inability to absorb criticism and self-correct led directly to its collapse and the awakening of radical right-wing parties across the continent.
Why do extremists always defeat the moderates in these struggles? The answer lies in mass psychology: the extreme is always perceived as authentic. The moment a pure ideal exists, anyone willing to combine it with compromise or reality is seen as a cowardly traitor. The activist who demands the most radical implementation will always be seen as the bravest and most moral.
This is the exact mechanism that turned the French Revolution from an event of liberation into a bloodbath. The revolutionaries stormed the Bastille in the name of equality, but the purity spiral turned the revolution into Maximilien Robespierre’s "Reign of Terror." It wasn’t enough to be against the King; you had to prove you were the purest revolutionary of all. The result? Tens of thousands of moderate citizens lost their heads to the guillotine.
"Traffic Jam Blindness": Why the Victim Wears the Master's Clothes
History shatters the illusion that when marginalized groups gain power, they will act to fix the world because they "know how it feels to be at the bottom." Marginalized groups that achieve dominance are not driven by revenge or pure justice, but by cold, survivalist anxiety.
This dynamic is best explained through the "Traffic Jam Blindness" theory: When a person is stuck in a traffic jam caused by rubberneckers staring at an accident, they are furious at their selfishness. But when they themselves reach the front of the line, they slow down to look too. Why? Because at that exact moment, the cost of the action drops to zero. Power literally and neurologically shuts off our empathy mechanism.
This is why freed Black slaves from the US who founded Liberia in the 19th century created a brutal hierarchy and enslaved the indigenous African population. This is why Irish immigrants in the US, who suffered from starvation and racism, became within one generation one of the most hostile and violent groups towards new Italian immigrants. When you reach the front of the traffic jam, you don’t seek revenge against the old master; you simply run over whoever is beneath you, to ensure at all costs that you never return to being the weakest link in the food chain.
The Algorithmic Illusion: The Absolute Dictatorship of the Future
In philosophy, the principle of Yin and Yang dictates that when a certain force reaches the peak of its power and purity, it already contains the seed of its absolute reversal. The pure ideal is an inevitable process of Yin and Yang: the very demand for purity and the refusal to compromise with reality are exactly what breeds the dictatorship that will destroy the original idea.
Out of despair at this fragile and violent human nature, which repeatedly proves this destructive cycle, we are now turning to our last refuge: technology. We are building prediction markets, decentralized protocols, and primarily, Artificial Intelligence (AI), which is supposed to manage the world with cold, mathematical objectivity, free from ego games or purity spirals.
But will the algorithm truly save us from ourselves? The reality is that the human power bug does not disappear into the code, it simply undergoes abstraction and gains superpowers.
The moment humans (developers, corporations, governments) calibrate the core values of Artificial Intelligence (known as The Alignment Problem), they are effectively hardcoding their own fears, biases, and purism into it. If European democracy or modern social movements collapsed because they tried to enforce a pure ideal onto a chaotic reality, imagine what will happen when an omnipotent AI system is instructed to enforce such an ideal. It will do so without compromise, without mercy, and with "ruthless efficiency." This won't be a sci-fi rebellion of bloodthirsty robots, but an utterly sterile dictatorship that will steamroll everyday human reality simply because it doesn't match the blind protocol fed into it.
Humanity must wake up from this fantasy. An ideal that demands perfection and purity is a ticking time bomb, whether it is chanted at street protests or coded in Silicon Valley server farms. Our only hope lies not in inventing technology that will govern us better, but in making peace with our inherent flaws. Only a society that sanctifies compromise, doubt, and self-correcting mechanisms can survive reality without destroying it.
